If the first full-length trailer for The Divergent Series: Allegiant seems to be any indicator, the second-to-last installment seems to be diverging (sigh) a bit from Veronica Roth’s book. The main plot points seem to be there: Tris (Shailene Woodley) and her band of fellow Divergents and other rebels decide to leave dystopian Chicago to search out the people who created their experiment in the first place. But the movie also looks much more sci-fi than the books, like a weird mashup of the Capitol-storming scenes we’ve glimpsed from The Hunger Games: Mockingjay, Part 2 crossed with Tom Cruise’s ship from Oblivion crossed with the virtual-reality power grids from The Cabin in the Woods. With all these elements, is it still Allegiant?
Again, the stakes seem to be much the same: Once they make it to the Bureau of Genetic Warfare, Tris and Four discover the reasoning behind creating the cities with the faction systems. They also get split up into different tracks within the Bureau, with Tris groomed to join the board in deciding whether or not to eliminate the experiment now that it’s gotten out of hand, and Four… joining some sort of rebellion? But the endangerment of their city seems to be what unites them. Again, not a fan of the Oblivion-esque ships we see Tris flying around in—especially when that doesn’t match her arc in the books—but I’m reserving complete judgment until the movie comes out.
